Lerotse the Popular Melon

Bogobe jwa lerotse has a wonderfully subtle flavour given to it by the lerotse melon.  This fruit has an orange flesh which is not sweet, and looks almost identical to a water melon. Bogobe jwa Lerotse is a type of porridge, a national dish of Botswana, made from the melon and has a unique delicate flavour. Eaten raw, it tastes a little like cucumber, and when cooked it gives the porridge a lovely flavour. Recently we see the sale of Lerotse Juice which is a wholly natural extract of the Melon.

Ingredients

  • ½ Lerotse
  • 1kg Sorghum
  • 1 cup Madila or Sour Milk
  • Mayonnaise (optional)
  • water

Method

  1. Slice lerotse and peel it. Remove the seeds.
  2. Cut lerotse into pieces to fit the pot.
  3. Boil water to fill about 1/4 of the pot. When boiling, add enough lerotse to fill the pot and cover. When the volume reduces, add more lerotse, and continue until all the lerotse pieces have been added.
  4. Cook gently for another 30 minutes, until the lerotse can be whisked with a whisk. Slowly stir in the sorghum, a little at a time, while you whisk so that all the lumps are broken down. At this point the mixture should be of a creamy consistency – like a typical soft porridge.
  5. Cover the pot and allow simmering for a bit.
  6. Then Add more sorghum while stirring with a cooking stick to avoid lumps.
  7. Continue adding bogobe and stirring to a desired thick consistency and allow to cook for about 15 min more. Add the sour milk, gently folding it in. Add 3tbs of mayonnaise and fold in. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

Leave to stand for minutes, then serve.
